ART CRUISE is a series of small‑format painting experiences that bring you inside art history. In each class you will paint a different avant‑garde artist. So‑called modern masters, such as Monet, Kahlo, and the Surrealists come to life by your own hand.
We continue the series with Pablo Picasso, the restless experimenter who helped fracture and rearrange the way we see painting. Often celebrated as a towering “modern master” and critiqued for his outsized ego and treatment of women, Picasso’s work nonetheless transformed painting through Cubism’s sharp angles, layered planes, and multiple viewpoints. This class takes a self-critical but affectionate look at his legacy and most inventive geometric compositions.
This cruise through the avant-garde embraces formal breakthroughs while questioning the myth of the solitary male genius. Cubism, a century later, becomes a toolkit for changing how we perceive everyday objects while breaking apart and rebuilding the canonical figure central to so many art historical compositions.
ART CRUISE sessions are guided in a studio atmosphere by a professional artist, for all skill levels. In this two‑session course over two consecutive weeks, each artist develops a Cubist, Picasso‑inspired portrait, experimenting with fragmentation, bold color, and shifting perspective.

We continue the series with Frida Kahlo, the inimitable portraitist and revolutionary. Kahlo’s work championed self-design and the power of femininity. Her dreamlike imagery pushed beyond Surrealism from a distinctly Mexican vantage point. Today Kahlo stands as a global icon, widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the last century, resonating across feminist, queer, working-class, academic and contemporary art discourses.

Chose between two available prints: Canadian Lynx or three deer from the Midnight Series.
Three leaping deer taken in the mid-1890s distill the intensity of the breakthrough Midnight Series.
Shiras’ otherworldly Canadian Lynx was taken in 1902 on a photographic canoeing expedition north of Spirit Lake.
These archival prints extend the legacy of a photographic innovator and artist who wrote the first federal protections for species in the United States. These laws remain cornerstones of modern conservation in North America and beyond.

We kick off the series with Claude Monet, the father of Impressionism. Monet’s work championed commonplace scenes that became immersive fields of color. Monet’s obesession with light and atmosphere has continued to influence leading artists today, including Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell.
Guided in Cruise’s studio atmosphere by professional artists, these sessions are designed for all skill levels.
